Designated Research Ethics Boards
- Alberta Cancer Board research Ethics Board: The Alberta Cancer Board Research Ethics Board reviews all new protocols and annual renewals from researchers at the Cross Cancer Institute.
- Community Research Ethics Board of Alberta (CREBA): The Community Research Ethics Board of Alberta (CREBA) provides review of health research being conducted in any region, organization or authority that does not have a duly constituted health research ethics board and process.
- University of Alberta Health Research Ethics Board (Panels A and B): The Health Research Ethics Board (HREB) administers the ethics review process for all faculty, staff, and students of the University of Alberta (U of A) Health Sciences Faculties, Capital Health, and the Caritas Health Group. The HREB has two panels: Biomedical Research and Health Research.
- University of Calgary Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board (CHREB): There are two Research Ethics Boards at the University of Calgary. The Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board (CFREB) covers researchers in: Kinesiology, Medicine, Nursing, Physicians or other health care professionals in the Calgary Health Region, Recruiting subjects wholly or substantially from a health care setting within the Calgary Health Region.
- The University of Lethbridge Human Subject Research Committee: oversees all human subject research on campus, but the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Management have their own human subject committees which report to the University of Lethbridge Human Subject Research Committee.

- Aboriginal Research Protocols: a set of ethical research practices with Aboriginal communities in the area of mental health, created by the Aboriginal Research Protocols sub-committee for the Alberta Health Services - Alberta Mental Health Board.
- Alberta Research Ethics Community Consensus Initiative (ARECCI): The goals of ARECCI, as stated in 2003 are: 1.) To develop a common understanding and broad consensus on issues of ethics screening and review. 2.) To increase the clarity, consistency, transparency, and efficiency of ethics screening and review processes in Alberta. 3.) To recommend an approach to answering the questions: What kind of investigation or project is it? What process of ethics review should be used for each kind? What level of review is appropriate: full or expedited? 4.) To develop guidelines and tools for Alberta's health researchers, managers, ethics boards and other stakeholders to implement the recommendations. 5.) To influence health regional, provincial and federal policy related to ethics review processes.
- ARECCI Ethics Decision-Support Tools for Projects: Two ethics decision-support guides have been developed by the Alberta Research Ethics Community Consensus Initiative (ARECCI) Network to assist leaders and organizations in their projects. They are the ARECCI Guidelines for Quality Improvement and Evaluation Projects and the ARECCI Ethics Screening Tool.
- Provincial Health Ethics Network: Page with contact information for Alberta Health Research Ethics Boards. The Provincial Health Ethics Network (PHEN) of Alberta is a non-profit organization which provides resources on addressing ethical issues related to health. PHEN does not advocate for or take positions on particular ethical issues; its role is to facilitate thoughtful, informed and reasoned ethical decision-making from all perspectives.
