Who Can Apply?

Do I have to be studying in a particular faculty in order to be eligible for a CRGI Studentship?

No. Applicants can be studying in any faculty or department as long as the focus of their research is the mental health of seniors or adults with disabilities.

Can I apply for a CRGI Studentship even though I've already been awarded another scholarship?

Yes. Students may receive up to 40% of the value of their CRGI award from any single external agency. Supplemental income is NOT additive; as long as the value of any single award does not exceed 40% of the value of their CRGI award, students may receive an unlimited number of awards.

I've been accepted into a course-based Master's level program at an Alberta university. Am I still eligible for the CRGI Studentship even though I'm not doing a thesis-based program?

Course-based students must fulfill the following criteria in order to be eligible for a CRGI Studentship: i) the student must have a supervisor ii) the student's major project must be based on research or evaluation.

Funding Parametres

If I'm awarded a studentship, do I automatically receive the $21,500 each year?

No. The $20,000 stipend will be disbursed at the beginning of each school year. The research allowance of $1,500 is only disbursed upon receipt of invoices for research-related expenses (see guidelines).

What do you mean when you say seniors or adults with disabilities?

The CRGI Studentships are made possible by a grant from the Ministry of Seniors and Community Supports. The Ministry serves two main populations: 1) seniors and 2) adults with disabilities. The term "disabilities" encompasses the following: developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, severe mental illness, brain injuries, or a combination of these.

What do you mean when you say mental health? Do you mean mental illness?

The scope of “mental health” is broadly defined as including individuals with mental illness, cognitive disabilities (e.g., dementia), and intellectual impairments, as well as behavioral issues associated with these conditions. It also includes the promotion of good mental health and prevention of mental illness.

Application Form and Process

I noticed that there are some sections of the application form that have blue headings and others that have green headings. What's the difference?

The different coloured headings indicate who is responsible for filling out that section of the application form. The green headings should be filled out by the applicant, whereas the blue headings are to be filled out by your supervisor.

What do I need to submit in my application package?

You will need to submit a completed CRGI Studentship Application Form as well as all appendices outlined in the form. More information is provided in the CRGI Studentship Guidelines.

How do I submit an application?

You will need to submit your entire application package by email to Corrina Pasarica. As well, you will need to submit four hard copies by mail or courier.

Will I receive confirmation that you have received my application?

You will receive an email confirmation of your application submission. If you do not  receive confirmation within 2 business days of submitting your application, please contact Corrina Pasarica.

Who reviews my application?

Applications for the CRGI Studentships will be reviewed by a Studentship Review Panel for merit and feasibility. The Panel will be comprised of external experts, chosen for their expertise in the area of mental health and their methodological expertise.
